Chihuahuas are not outside dogs. They are at home in apartments, as well as in the country. Due to their size, they should never be left unattended outdoors as birds and other wildlife will make them easy prey. This breed does well with novice or first-time dog owners. |

Often times, you will hear Chihuahua owners comment on how each of their Chis have a unique personality but there are a few generalizations to the breed. Chihuahuas are graceful, alert and very loyal to their owners, they also have the tendency to become very attached to their owners. "Family" is part of a Chihuahua's life - They attach to each member of their family.
Even though the Chihuahua is a very small dog, there is nothing that you can do to convince them of that! Chihuahua's instinct is to protect and guard their owners. If a Chihuahua senses a stranger or feels that there could be possible danger for their owners, they will bark as if they are a powerful watch dog breed. Even if your Chihuahua is a quiet dog by nature, you should expect their behavior to change if a stranger comes to your door. Once a Chihuahua is in their protective mode, they will show no fear toward anything.
Because Chihuahuas are extremely attached to their owners, they are also very protective of them. They are leery of strangers or unknown people who come into your home. Because of this, Chihuahuas make fantastic watch dogs. Your Chihuahua will alert you to anything out of the ordinary but due to their size, can't defend you.
Your Chihuahua will also need a lot of human contact and attention, but every ounce of attention and love they ask from you will be returned ten-fold. They are very in-tuned with their owners, and will make sure to get their desired affection, exercise and petting by going so far as to pat their paw on your hand to gain your attention.
Chihuahuas are not an independent breed and are not the ideal pet for families that have smaller than school aged children or that require them to home alone for more than eight hours a day. They are the perfect companion for people who are looking for a forever loyal buddy to keep them company for hours on their lap or at your feet at night while you sleep. |

Exercising Your Chihuahua |
Chihuahuas are a fantastic choice for people who live in apartments or smaller homes because they do not require a lot of space to roam and explore. They do not require a great amount of exercise but don't think this means NO exercise.
All dogs require some sort of exercise. Keeping their tiny size in mind, an average exercise walk for you is a very long walk for your Chihuahua. Often times, simply playing with your Chihuahua in your living room will provide the necessary exercise to keep them happy and healthy.
Due to their size and frailty, Chihuahuas are very susceptible to heat and cold. They cannot be expose to extreme weather for long periods of time, and not without some preplanning and preparation. If it is cold outside, be sure to have appropriate toy breed dog clothing for your Chihuahua. Sweaters, shirts and even jackets are available from a variety of retail locations. When it is warm outside, be sure to have plenty of water for them to drink during breaks. The general rule of thumb is to not exercise your Chihuahua outside if it is above 80 degrees or below 50 degrees.

Chihuahua Puppy Growth Chart |
|
One of the most commonly asked question of new chihuahua owners is "How big will my Chihuahua puppy grow to be?"
These is no guaranteed way to determine the actual adult weight of any Chihuahua. Genetics are a tricky thing. Even if your puppy's parents are tiny, a great-great-great grandparent may have been three pounds heavier. Genes can be passed down from as far back as seven generations. Selecting your Chihuahua puppy from a reputable breeder that tracks their dog's pedigrees can give you a much better estimate for your puppy's adult weight but there are additional factors beyond genetics that come into play when making calculations: The activity level of the dog and if the dog receives proper nutrition.
The Chihuahua Weight Chart is a tool that can be used to help with the estimating of weight that a Chi puppy will reach once full grown. Again, this chart is no guarantee but it helps hone in on a more accurate estimate - Usually within 1/2 pound.

The importance of dental hygiene has become much ore prevalent in both humans and in dogs as of late. For years it was thought that appropriate chew toys would do the job of cleaning a dog's teeth. Unfortunately, when it comes to the Chihuahua, their tiny mouths are often stuffed tight with teeth, allowing deposits to get stuck between them. Infection and decay from these deposits are very common and for your Chihuahua, such an infection is detrimental. Daily cleaning of your Chihuahua's teeth is the perfect solution.
Cleaning Their Teeth
Unless your Chihuahua has had their teeth brushed from a very young age, chances are the will not like the feeling of having their teeth touched. It is recommend that you begin training your Chihuahua for teeth brushing as a puppy but if this is not possible, training is needed for any age.
- While your Chihuahua is laying beside you (because that is their favorite place to be) gently moving your finger around on their teeth. This will get them used to the feeling.
- After they have become comfortable with your finger, switch to a dampened dog tooth brush. The finger cap kind are a perfect transition. Another type that is good for your Chihuahua's small mouth is the QuadBrush, which allows you to brush from many angles.
- The next step is to add a tiny amount of dog toothpaste. DO NOT USE HUMAN TOOTHPASTE! You must use pastes designed specifically for dog. Cain & Able KissAble Toothpaste is a nice product to use since it freshens breath and cleans.
- After a few weeks, you can then try the dog toothbrush.. It is recommended to use it for a few days with no paste. As your Chihuahua gets used to the feeling, you can slowly add more and more dog toothpaste. Before you know it, your dog will accept this as a normal part of his day.
- If all else fails and your Chihuahua is not willing to let you brush their teeth, you can use Dental Wipes. They are not as through as actually brushing so make it a last effort solution.
